senior capstone: selfie perception

Content Curation, Book Design

I take selfies. In fact, you probably take selfies too because most of us take selfies. But selfies tend to get a bad rep and most people only think of them as proof that the next generation is descending into an increasingly narcissistic age. With this book, I hope to explore the where selfies fit into digital communications today and help readers reconsider where selfies fit into their lives. In order to reconsider something, it has to first be removed from its original context which led to the choice of a book of selfies rather than a screen-based project. Because the selfie exists on the cusp of the real and the digital, the book's typography and visual language explores this duality through the use of contrasting photography and pixelations, messaging bubbles, and spreads that show selfies as seen by both the taker and the outside world.

While this book aims to approach the topic of the selfie from a variety of angles, in the end I hope that readers come away from it with a new insight and appreciation for the selfie. Because when you take a selfie, you're choosing to share a piece of yourself with the world. Even if you have to stop in the middle of the street to get the perfect one.
